COVID-19 PCR Testing: How to collect a nasopharyngeal swab specimen Jun 01, 2022

According to WHO recommend,The nasopharyngeal swab / nasal swab is the preferred testing swab for swab-based covid testing.


The specific sampling protocol for nasopharyngeal swab is as follows:

1. Gently insert the swab head into the nasal palate in the nasal passages, and after a while, slowly rotate the nasal swab to exit.

2. Quickly put the nasal swab into this sampling tube.

3. Break the nasopharyngeal swab at the breakpoint, discard the handle end and tighten the cap.

4. Freshly collected specimens should be transported to the laboratory within 48 hours (2 days) at 2-8°C. For longer term storage, the specimen should be storage at -70°C or below. After the specimens are sent to the laboratory, nucleic acid extraction should be performed as soon as possible.

5. After sampling, fill in the related information on the tube label.

· A throat swab specimen collected by a healthcare professional (HCP)
